Why is it, when you’re out for a quiet beer with a few friends in a cool bar, a man, a naked man covered head to toe in mud always has to come along and steal the limelight? This country…
Nevertheless, that is indeed what happened to me on Wednesday in a little known bar in the depths of London Bridge station. The bar, Shunt, was recommended to me by a friend a while back after he discovered it - it’s the most bizarre location - but bear with - it’s directly opposite the entrance/exit to the LB tube station, near a coke machine and a coffee shop. There’s an unmarked doorway noticeable only for the fact that most train stations don’t have unmarked doorways behind which sits a lady at an old wooden writing table. Go in there. There is then a 200m long unlit tunnel (it’s pretty scary) and then you burst out into an amazing bar in an enormous room. It’s very weird but very cool.
Anyway - after a number of beers, this ominous music starts and the aforementioned man struts in and stands on this staged area, pulls a chain connected to a bucket hanging from the ceiling, where yet more mud descends on him. This goes on for an uncomfortably long time and in the meantime I have managed to smash my glass on the floor having turned to my friend in shock once I caught sight of his less than impressive manhood…I digress, but that “artist” owes me a Stella! Although, I think revenge was had when he went to pull on a second chain and the mud completely misses him.
I guess the funny thing is, that I forgot all about this until about 4′o clock the following day, just as the heavy, heavy Stella fog began to lift - perhaps, in hindsight, a flashback I could have done without. However, without it, you’d have never been privy to this story…..
