…just another night out for “The Circle”…..
No-one can remember how this came about….although it was probably something to do with another zany suggestion from Dave Stevens…..but last Saturday, eight of The Circle hardcore embarked on another epic journey to the centre of London, armed only with a hat and an item of facial hair.
Due to meet at The Woodstock, just off Bond St at four o’clock - I was costume-less and Steve had been sheepishly hiding his sombrero under his coat (pretty sure the coat was only brought for that reason). As we approached the door, we peeked through and saw the motley crew awaiting us - there was no shame on their part, costumes had been adorned since Maidenhead. John looked proud - he’d made a girl scream in fear
Grabbing a pint, Steve and I got into costume making the hairy group complete, the transitions were as follows:-
John Ling => Natasha
Julie Ling => Crazy Pixie (not sure that was the official name)
Dave Stevens => Pennywise
Jenni S => Dirk
Joe Maxwell => Yosemite Sam
Ken Wyatt => William Winkerton IV
Steve Brown => Jose
and me [Beth Langley - Ed.] => Switchblade Barry
Shrugging off strange looks, we progressed from the Woodstock to the Spread Eagle, where we recruited a drunken Scotsman and encouraged him to play the bagpipes for us before making a sharp exit to the Argyll Arms, where William Winkerton IV thought it would be very much within the bounds of his character to smoke a cigar…cool.
We progressed to O’Neills, where Ken decided to take on the role of bouncer, badgering the potential clientele for ID, which, oddly, people actually gave him.
We moved on again, to the John Snow, where I got sidetracked by a guy wanting to show me his recently acquired Police back catalogue. It seemed interesting at the time. Incidentally, by this point, I’d totally forgotten I was wearing a pencil moustache.
Meanwhile the rest of the party moved on to the Blue Post before I joined them and wandered to the Green Man.
A trip to McDonalds followed, via a sex shop, before we embarked on the final pub as a group - I’ve been reminded by the photos that this was The Black Horse.
As some of the group made a wise decision to head home, Steve and I couldn’t admit enough was enough and headed for the aptly titled, Endurance, to take control of the jukebox until the wee hours….
Another Circle night to remember….well, if not immediately, but over the course of the next few weeks. hazy memories…but good ones ![]()
Well done, Beth!
A vivid and eloquently put, reliving of a great night out. Something which I very rarely remember myself.
